I read an important reminder yesterday: pain & suffering are not the same.
Life can be painful, but suffering is a choice. It might seem strange, but it’s liberating to know this. However, just knowing it isn’t enough.
This is HUGE to understand:
👉 The reason we suffer instead of just feeling pain is because our brains are addicted to suffering. Our brains like it!
You see, our brains enjoy creating stories around our pain. These stories include things like:
- Why we’re right or wrong
- Who’s at fault
- Why life is unfair
- Why obstacles shouldn’t have existed
- Why challenges are “bad”
As a result, we spiral into inner turmoil that could manifest as sadness, frustration, or simply, a lack of excitement for life.
We might notice this when “big pains” happen, but here’s the tougher question: What about the turmoil we’ve been carrying from 1, 5, or even 10 years ago?
The truth is, most pain is actually rooted in your childhood beliefs. All crime, no punishment ☺️🏔️
Last weekend I found myself on the high traverse that was a pure fun & amazing adventure!
We walked along a stunning knife edge ridge line and enjoyed pristine, easy pitches of immense, exciting exposure. We had amazing mountain and alpine lake views the whole time and we didn’t encounter a single soul on our route.
It was perfect!
At only a little over 3,000’ of elevation gain, the misery was so minimal, that the reward had me saying, “this seems too good to be true.”
My mom, who was my incredible climbing partner on this 8+ hour expedition, called me on it.
She said, “What does that say about your expectations of hard how you have to work to enjoy good things in life?”
She was right.
A long time ago, a badass older local surfer lady once told me and mom, her motto was “All crime, no punishment. I surf the days where I score great waves, and don’t have to work my ass off on the paddle outs.”
That’s exactly what my day on the Beehive 5 felt like.
It’s funny, because it made me realize how much my philosophy of life has been ingrained into the opposite:
“Crime (reward) requires punishment.”
I must struggle & work really hard to be rewarded.
So where else was that belief playing out for me?
Only EVERYWHERE else!
I’ve made a lot of shifts over the last 5 years to create my best life but I know the plateaus I still hit in my areas like career and creative opportunities have everything to do with this belief.
You see, changing your world isn’t what changes how you feel.
It’s CHANGING how you FEEL that changes your world.

🛫I recently got on a plane to fly off to Washington state and it reminded me of my immense love for travel itself— getting on planes, visiting foreign places, or returning to somewhere familiar as someone new.
Like seriously, something about the process of being surrounded by a jumbled mix of totally different people with different stories all about to embark to a new or somewhat familiar place feels like peace to me.
For years, sleeping on airport floors, making camp in new countries, and fumbling through foreign languages to find grocery stores was my “norm” and it was incredible.
As Rolf Potts explains in the Art of Vagabonding, “Vagabonding is about gaining the courage to loosen your grip on the so-called certainties of this world. Vagabonding is about refusing to exile travel to some other, seemingly more appropriate, time of your life. Vagabonding is about taking control of your circumstances instead of passively waiting for them to decide your fate.”
So maybe now, when I get on a plane, it recalls that beautiful period of my life or maybe, it urges me to loosen my grip on the certainties ruminating through my own head.
Maybe if you went vagabonding, you’d naturally overcome your stress addictions, self limiting beliefs, and pains/resentments?
But maybe, if you overcame your stress addictions, rewrote your story, and healed your pain/resentment, you’d finally go live your biggest adventure?

You win some, you lose some🏔️
A couple day ago I headed out into the Wind River Range, filled with excitement about the first mountain adventure of the season.
This July has been particularly non-ideal for mountain climbing thanks to a harsh winter.
I just about ruled off that I wasn’t going to do any climbing in the Winds before leaving Wyo but when @ryfiki13 suggested an attempt at the North Arete of Ellingwood Peak, I was easily convinced.
We departed from Elkhart Park at 10am with 40lb and 65lb packs respectively, loaded up with camping supplies, food, tons of layers, and a whole bunch of heavy cams & gear.
We arrived at Island Lake at 5pm, made camp, and collapsed in exhaustion.
But the day wasn’t over.
With vague approach beta & possibly precarious snow conditions, we left camp to go scout the approach & route, adding another 5 miles.
Approaching at dawn the next morning, everything seemed to be looking up.
It takes us 3 hours to navigate 3 miles from basecamp.
It isn’t until we are 10 minutes away from the route base, halfway up the heinous scree slope, that we finally see it:
Patches of snow lingering on the roofs of the last official pitch & water drizzling down the alternate face to the right.
Beyond the last pitch, a pinnacle gives way to a notch before rising back to the true summit. Here, another snow patch glistens with no tell of what sort of depth/mass the snow covers.
The descent down the southeast couloir contains a skiable amount of snow that would leave us on a 10 rappel escape if the Southwest Slope was snow covered despite its sun-exposed angle.
It was either a risky gung-ho that might’ve been totally fine, but in realism, offered more risk than worthwhile.
Reluctantly, I had to let Ellingwood go.
We turned back to head back to camp and due to horrendous bugs, we cut our losses and decided to hike out— a 19 mile day, which ended in an absolute misery of hurt hips, shoulders, and feet from carrying a heavy pack for 7 hours.
36 miles & 34 hours later,
I’m humbled by the mountains,
graced by her power, in admiration of her ferocious boundaries,
and promising to myself that I will never attempt the Winds in July ever again💙😅

True Self ✨ VS 🧠The Ego
Alongside the exciting mindset clinic I’m co-hosting at Climbers Festival, I’m also super excited for another Limestone Rodeo.
The limestone rodeo is an outdoor repointing competition built for all skill levels and takes place at the limestone haven, Wild Iris.
It sounds like just fun and games for a bunch of amateur climbers but in reality, it’s a fierce battle ⚔️
Kidding! 😜
…Sorta.
Lots of people take it pretty seriously. There’s cash prizes awarded and achievement gained.
For me, competition is my kryptonite.
My ego feels good when I win, achieve, or perform. It makes me feel worthy, or unique, or special.
This is perfect example of climbing from extrinsic values.
Planning for the next rodeo, I have to watch my programming very closely and consciously choose intrinsic values.
Intrinsic values are when we gain confidence and enjoyment from the process instead of the result.
So while my Ego says:
- I want to win, strategize the best, and maybe even be seen as a great climber.
My True Self says something like:
- I love challenging myself. I love competing in the rodeo because it pushes me to do 15-30 routes in 8 hours that I would never push myself to do on my own.
Just like the rodeo, how does climbing pull you into bad thought habits?
For example:
- Wanting to be seen as a good climber,
- Feeling good about yourself when you send and bad about yourself during all the failure in the process,
- Climbing unique objectives to be seen as different,
- Always wanting to achieve harder grades,
- Or simply loving the result more than the process?

Growing up homeschooled, as a freshmen in high sch

Growing up homeschooled, as a freshmen in high school I was challenged with a project to plan a gap year ✈️
I spent a semester researching a theoretical gap year of destinations across the world that would create an unforgettable year.
When presenting my powerpoint, my mom’s eyes lit up with curiosity.
One day while out surfing our empty beach break, my mom paddles over to me and says,
“We should do it.”
“Do what?” I replied.
“Do that gap year you planned.”
“Haha that’s funny, mom.”
“No, seriously.”
A couple months later, my mom had booked one-way tickets to Europe for 7.
We flew to Norway with only backpacks on our back, a huge coffin surfboard bag, and climbing gear.
After climbing random roadside crags through Norway, and getting rained out through Ireland, we flew to Germany to pick up an RV and began roaming again🚌
Like I shared in my TEDx talk (link in bio), the experience changed everything I believed about the world and myself.
Stepping into foreign places with just the essentials and doing challenging things on trails, routes, and waves I’d never experienced
forced me to face the programs that were ruling my life.
In the absence of competition, validation, and acknowledgement, I realized I felt unworthy without achievements to pursue.
Thanks to the bold actions and constant support from my mom @nomadswithapurpose I was able to rewire my program around worthiness, learn intrinsic values, and find fulfillment in the process instead of the result.
Without further ado, happiest of birthdays to most badass, intuitive, incredible adventure partner, bestie, business partner, and mama I could ever ask for!

Are your shoulders tense? Is your brow furrowed? A

Are your shoulders tense?
Is your brow furrowed?
Are you breathing shallow?
Is your jaw tense?
Are thinking about things you need to do or worries you have?
Maybe your first instinct is to say no to all these things.
If you interrupted me on an average day I would definitely say no even though it’d be a total lie.
Why?
Because admitting to stress feels like admitting to not having things under control.
But more importantly, we don’t admit to stress because it’s so dang normal. Stress is the baseline for most of us even when we think we’re relaxed.
Stress is the killer of courage, creativity, performance, and productivity.
